there is no doubt that helping students find a job is one of the primary functions of university education, but universities do exist for other purposes such as improving students’ analytical skills and raising students’ moral standards.

a university education can be seen as a process of improving students’ analytical thinking. the variety of courses offered at university inspires students in various ways, therefore improving their analytical ability. for example, science courses such as math and biology help students develop a rational way of thinking whereas arts courses such as literature 123ve to let students ponder over issues from a logical, multi- dimensional perspective; and courses in social sciences force students to recognize the ideas that have been traditionally assumed to be acceptable and unproblematic. with the development of these types of analytical thinking, graduates can face future challenges with more confidence and enthusiasm.

also, university education is expected to improve students’ moral standards. this is rooted in universities’ belief that students’ awar123ss of responsibility towards their community and their country is of high importance. in this ever-deg123rating society and civilization, students are encouraged actively participate in improving the local community. a university that provides care and facilities for physically disadvantaged students may inspire the graduates to better handle situations in the future where they may have to interact with the disabled community. a successful university education is supposed to produce morally sound graduates, therefore increasing their employability.

in conclusion, university education not only helps students locate a decent job but will also develop other qualities such as enhancing their analytical skills and cultivating their hunger and spirit for life.

does parental permissiveness affect childrens development?

arguments

1. the excessive pennissiveness of present-day parents is doing more harm than good to children and society as well.

2. children should develop the habit of working and living independently and, meanwhile, practise the virtue of being filial to their parents.

3. children who have a surfeit of happiness in their childhood often emerge like stodgy puddings and fail to make a success of life.

4. the fact that young people nowadays are self-centred, indifferent and inconsiderate of others is largely the outcome of parental permissiveness in their childhood.

5. parental authority in a family helps a child to develop his character healthily.

6. parents should exercise strict discipline over their children because, the more permissive the parents are, the more rebellious against their parents the children will become.

7. lavish care and excessive permissiveness will only give rise to hedonism among the younger generation.

8. if one lets the child do whatever he wants to, he will ruin the child for life.

9. we have to admit the fact that we now have got a generation of spoilt, selfcentred brats with no respect for their elders.

10. the spread of juvenile delinquency in our age is largely due to parental pennissiveness.

counter-argmnents

1. more care for children is not the same as permissiveness to them.

2. the truth is that parents nowadays do not take enough care of their children and often neglect their development because the parents are only interested in their careers.

3. parents are not at all permissive to their children. violence often takes place in families in which children are abused.

4. only a relaxed family atmosphere can help the physical and psychological growth of children.

5. to let children do what they like contributes to their independence and competence in their adult lives.

6. it is unfair to blame parents for the spread of juvenile delinquency. there are a lot of other causes involved.

7. many cases show that children leave home and become members of street gangs just because they can not bear authoritarian control over them by their parents.

8. strict discipline does not always work in terms of developing childrens personal qualities. too much pressure on children leads to rebellion and other extreme actions.

9. parents are not justified in using violence to keep discipline and maintain their authority over the children.

10. children are human beings, too. they need to be protected instead of being frequently scolded or physically abused.

題目:some people believe the purpose of education is to prepare inspaniduals to be useful to society, while others say the purpose is to help inspaniduals to achieve personal ambitions. please discuss both views and give your opinion.

范文:what does education mean for a person - to gain the knowledge and ability to excel in professional career or to enable him to contribute meaningfully to society?

as for me, they are not mutually exclusive, and further, the latter can and does embrace the former.

narrowly, education facilities an understanding of oneself, providing a chance to enlighten one to know more about what he wants.

that is, from kindergarten to university, one gradually realizes his desire that usually comes with different types and requires skills and ability of various kinds to fulfill. then, in order to make these dreams come into being, he has nothing to do but learn, and more importantly, being educated, other than self learning, is more effective way to expedite this. consider, for example, a girl who dreams of becoming a nurse. only by attending the college will she be able to fulfill her ambition.

then, for a broader perspective, becoming truly education requires sufficient mastery of one particular academic area to permit inspaniduals to make contributions to social development and construction. it is a fact universally acknowledged, that any society is made up by inspaniduals who work in positions of all kinds. then, through education no matter what form it is, they become knowledgeable citizens and, at the same time, take on the role in their communities. theoretically, the more education they receive, the more they will pay back to the society. hence, great benefits eventually accrue to society as a result of education.

to sum up, it is easy for me to draw a conclusion that education amounts to far more than gaining knowledge and ability; that is, it deals people a chance to be entitled to self-determination. and with all these inspanidual efforts coming up together, the society develops greatly.

1. whats your favourite colour?

im not really all that sure actually, but i guess its probably a toss up between green and blue. you know, ive always liked those two colours, and they were the ones that popped to mind when you asked me the question.

2. are there any colours you dislike?

no i wouldnt say there are, cos i mean, obviously for some things, there are certain colours that i dont think would look so good, such as me driving a pink car around! but that doesnt mean i dont like pink, it just means i wouldnt choose it for certain things.

3. are colours important to you?

not really, no. i mean, i might take the colour into account when choosing something, like a shirt or pair of trousers, but you know, in the grand scheme of things, theyre really not that important at all, especially compared with things like friends and family.

4. is colour very important to you when youre buying clothes?

yeah, i suppose it kind of is, because certain colours tend to look better on me than others. for example, a lot of my friends have told me i look quite good in a white shirt, so i tend to favour that colour when im choosing a new shirt. and as well as this, ill also consider the colours of the clothes ive already got, and maybe choose a colour which i dont already have.

5. do you prefer light or dark coloured clothes?

i honestly dont have a preference, because i mean, i actually like to wear a combination of both. so just to give you an example, i often wear light trousers together with a dark shirt, or vice versa, because the light and dark colours kind of compliment each other, if you know what i mean!

6. what colour would you choose to paint the walls of your room?

thats an interesting question! what colour would i choose? um... i guess i would probably choose a creamy white colour, or possibly a yellowish-white, which would make the room feel a bit cosier than plain white. and at the same time, it would make my room feel nice and bright. so yeah, thats probably the colour i would choose.

7. is there any colour you would not want your walls to be?

yeah, for sure. i mean, firstly, i wouldnt want my walls to be pink, as that’s way too feminine for me, and also i wouldnt want my walls to be a dark colour, like black for example, because i think it would be depressing and possibly also make me feel a bit claustrophobic.

8. do you think different types of people like different colours?

thats an interesting question! um, thinking about it, id say yeah, theres probably an element of truth to it. obviously, men favour the more masculine colours, like black and blue, while women gravitate towards the more feminine colours like pink and red. but apart from that, i think its also probably fair to say that outgoing people probably like bold and bright colours relatively more than people who are reserved and inward.

1. do you think its important to be on time?

yeah, i think it definitely is, because it’s basic manners to be on time for things. you know, i think you‘d agree it’s pretty rude to keep people waiting, and so it kind of leaves a bad impression on people.

2. how do you feel when others are late?

well i guess it kind of depends, because i mean, if there’s a good reason for being late, you know, like getting stuck in traffic, then i won’t really mind that much. but you know, if the person doesn’t really have any excuse and it’s simply because they couldn’t be bothered to arrive on time, then i suppose i might feel a bit annoyed.

other ideas:

if someone’s late by only a few minutes or so, then that’s no big deal, you know, i have no problem at all with that. but if someone’s late by, like, an hour or something, then it can be pretty annoying, especially if i’ve gone to the trouble of getting there on time.

3. are you, yourself, late very often?

if yes:

yeah, i am. and i know it’s a bad habit, but for some reason, no matter how hard i try, i always seem to end up being late for things!

if no:

no, i wouldn’t say i am. you know, most of the time i’m pretty good with being on time for things, because i always make a quite big effort not to be late.

7. when does time seem to move fast, and when does it seem to move slowly?

well, i think most people would agree that time moves fast when you’re having fun. and a prime example would be when playing computer games, cos i mean, whenever i play online with my friends, it always seems that only an hour or two has passed, but in actual fact, it’s probably been four or five hours!

and time normally goes slowly when you’re bored or simply just not enjoying yourself. for example, i remember at school, some of my classes felt like they would never end, when in fact they were just, like, 45 minutes long!

8. if you could go back in time, what would you do differently?

that’s a good question. what would i do differently? um….., ok well first of all, if i could go back in time, i would definitely spend more time practicing the piano, because you know, i never really practiced that much when i was younger, and i kind of regret it now, because i’d love to be able to play the piano well.

如考題:it is suggested that all the young adults should undertake a period of unpaid work helping people in the community. does it bring more benefits or drawbacks to the community and the young people?

1 there are many people who need help. indeed, when an old person feels sick, the volunteers could offer first aid before the doctor or the ambulance arrives. likewise, if a disabled person has difficulty doing some daily activities such as shopping, the assistance from young volunteers is indispensable.

2 the world needs more love.

1 as far as the young people are concerned, they could develop the sense of responsibility, independence as well as interpersonal skills in the process of helping others in the neighborhood. in this way, people may live in harmony in the community.

write about the following topic:

as mass communication and transport continue to grow, societies are becoming more and more alike leading to a phenomenon known as globalization. some people fear that globalization will inevitably lead to the total loss of cultural identity.

to what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

model answer:

globalization means that in some ways people around the world are becoming more and more similar. we often eat the same food, watch the same tv programmes, listen to the same music and we wear the same clothes. some of this at least can be blamed on the spread of multinational brands available all over the world.

on the surface, it may appear as if the global spanersity of cultural identities is being lost. if, the argument goes, people in tokyo and london look and dress the same, then that must mean that cultural differences are disappearing. however, i would argue that this is a very narrow definition of culture and that in fact cultural differences are as present as ever.

cultural identity is built on far more than just the films we watch or the jeans we wear. the foundation of cultural identity is shared values. when you look in detail at different cultures, you realize that the things that are important to one culture can be very different from the things valued by another culture.

take my own culture, india, as an example and compare it to a very different culture, japan. although i have never visited japan personally, i believe that it is a culture which places a lot of value on hard work and that people often work very long hours. the indian people, in contrast, greatly value their leisure time and strive to spend as much lime with their family as they possibly can. even if we consume the same products, i would argue that there are still some very deep-rooted differences.

to summarize, i do not accept that that total loss of cultural identity is inevitable, despite the influence of large companies and their products around the globe.

題目:as most people spend a major part of their adult life at work, job satisfaction is an important element of inspanidual wellbeing.

what factors contribute to job satisfaction?

how realistic is the expectation of job satisfaction for all workers?

nowadays many adults have full-time jobs and the proportion of their lives spent doing such jobs is very high. so feelings about one’s job must reflect how an inspanidual feels about his or her life as a whole, and because of this, job satisfaction is indeed very important for the wellbeing of that person.

employees get job satisfaction in a number of ways. firstly, a person needs to feel that they are doing valued and valuable work, so positive feedback from superiors is very important in this respect. a sense of fulfillment is also encouraged if a worker feels the job is worth doing because it contributes to the society or the economy as a whole. secondly, when someone feels they are improving or developing their skills through training opportunities, for example, then there is a sense of progression and purpose that rewards a worker. the sense of belonging to a team or a working community also contributes to job satisfaction because colleagues help each other to enjoy their working lives. satisfaction is also increased by a sense of responsibility for and loyalty to a team.

of course not everyone enjoys their work. hard economic realities mean that many people have little choice in the kind of job they can get. in some cases an employee is working in a job that suits neither their skills nor their personality. some jobs are repetitive and boring, and labour relations may be poor and lead to resentment and insecurity rather than to job satisfaction.

however, even though it is unlikely that all workers do feel happy in their work, i think it is not unrealistic to promote more job satisfaction in any job. if the factors identified above are implemented, then any job can be improved and more workers can feel greater degrees of job satisfaction.

if…, then…(條件狀語)

because(原因狀語)

… if … because ….(條件狀語 + 原因狀語)

when…,then…(時(shí)間狀語)

even though…,…(讓步狀語)

i think it is not unrealistic to…(我覺得這件事并非不真實(shí)……

…, and…(并列句)

neither…nor…(否定并列句)

1. what public holidays do you have in your country?

we’ve got loads of them, for example, the one that’s just passed was the national day holiday, and then we’ve got the spring festival of course - that’s probably the most important one - which is at the beginning of the year, sometime around, like, late january, beginning of february, that kind of time. and uh, what else do we have? uh…oh yeah, the dragon boat festival, mid-autumn festival, and um… there are a few others as well but i can’t remember them all off-hand i’m afraid!

2. do people in your country celebrate christmas?

um…it’s kind of hard to generalize, but i would say, to an extent, yeah. i mean, by and large, it’s the younger generation that tend to celebrate christmas, but they don’t celebrate it in the way westerners would. you know, in the west, people go to church, open presents, um…whereas over here, it’s kind of like, just, “l(fā)et’s get together for a party, go to ktv…” that sort of thing. so it is celebrated, but just in a slightly different least that’s my understanding anyway!

3. do you like public holidays?

yeah i do. you know, it gives me the opportunity to be together with my family for a bit, take some time off, so yeah, i always tend to look forward to them.

4. which public holidays do you like the most?

that’s a good question……. i guess i would have to say the spring festival, which i’m sure is most people’s favourite, the main reason being that it’s by far the most important festival in our culture. and so everything feels just a bit different during that time. you know, everyone seems happier, the streets are livelier, and it’s basically just like one long party which stretches on for a week or two. and, it’s also probably the only time of year you can eat and drink to your heart’s content without feeling guilty about it!

5. what do other people in your country usually do on public holidays?

i can’t speak for everyone, but i guess most people either stay at home or go travelling. and if you’ve ever stayed in china during a public holiday, you’ll have seen for yourself the hordes of people that flock to all the tourist spots, right across the country.

6. what would you like to do during the next public holiday?

umm…i haven’t really given it much thought actually! but seeing as i went travelling during the last one, i’ll probably just take it easy and spend the time chilling out at home. something like that!

7. do you think public holidays are important?

yeah, i think they really are, cos i mean, here in china, the public holidays are always on a certain festival, so it’s one way of helping maintain all the various customs and traditions we have. just to give you an example, if you took away the dragon boat festival holiday, it probably wouldn’t get the attention it deserved, and over time, people might simply stop bothering with all the customs that are associated with the festival, like dragon-boat racing. so yeah, i think it’s pretty important that we continue to have them.

8. do you think there should be more public holidays in your country?

no, not really, if i’m gonna be honest with you. i mean, i think we have enough as it is. almost every month there seems to be a public holiday of some sort, and you know, i think that’s more or less enough. there’s no need to go over the top with them , otherwise, ……. , i guess it would break up the momentum of our daily lives, if that makes sense!
