a £1,000 p.a. training and development allowance
six fees-only studentships, each one offering:
tuition fees at the international rate
a £1,000 p.a. training and development allowance
all awards are for up to three years in duration.
research themes
the full 'prize' studentship is available for research in any area within the faculties listed above.
the six fees-only studentships can only be awarded to those applicants whose proposed research falls within one of the following themes:
environment
food
health
prosperity & resilience
heritage & creativity
please note that these themes are intended to be broadly interpreted across subject areas. (for more the university's research themes see the link here.)
eligibility
funding is only open to international (non-eu) candidates. candidates will be required to meet the language requirements specified by their department upon entry.
deadline
the deadline for applications is friday 27th january 2017.
how to apply
as a first step, you will need to submit an application for admission to a phd in your chosen subject via our online admissions portal. the application must be for admission in october 2017.
in the 'scholarships applied for' box which appears within the funding section of your online application, you must quote 'international research studentship competition' in order for your application to be considered in this competition.
upload to your application a summary of your proposed research and any relevant skills or experience. your research proposal should indicate which of the research themes listed above it relates to, justifying the fit of the research to this theme. if you only wish to be considered for the full studentship, selection of a theme is not obligatory but you will increase your chances of being awarded funding if your research can be considered for both a full 'prize' studentship and a fees-only studentship and is tied to a university theme. the research proposal should be a maximum length of 700 words excluding references and should be clearly written for non-specialist readers. the research proposal is an important element of the funding decision; you may wish to consult the graduate school's guidance on writing a research proposal and/or your proposed supervisor. (if you later need to submit a different version of your research proposal than that included in your application for admission, this can be sent your prospective supervisor or to the relevant school director of postgraduate research studies.)
once stages 1-3 are complete, in order for your application to be considered in this competition, you must complete the registration form directly below before the stated deadline by to register your application for the competition. (important note: your application may not be considered if you do not complete this step or fail to provide the corresponding application id number. the application id number provided must relate to an application for admission in october 2017.)

please note that applications for entry in 2017 have now closed and all successful candidates have now been informed. information about scholarships for future years will be updated on this page later in 2017.
scholarships for students from india and other developing countries
what is available
under the prestigious felix scholarships scheme, the following awards will be available for programmes starting in september 2017, to candidates who can demonstrate academic excellence and financial need
indian citizens
four felix scholarships will be available to pursue postgraduate study (at either phd or masters level) at the university, starting in september 2017.
students from developing countries
one award, for study at masters level only, will be made to a student from a developing country*. phd candidates from developing countries should not apply for the felix scholarships and should instead consider other funding options (including those listed in our wider list of funding opportunities).
what the awards provide
these scholarships cover tuition fees at the international rate and provide a stipend (maintenance grant) to cover living expenses (the current level of which is £13,730). they also provide generous allowances for clothes, books and a return flight home. the awards are available (depending on eligibility) for up to 3 years.
criteria and conditions for candidates
you must demonstrate financial need
you must possess at least a first-class honours degree from a university or comparable institution
you must not hold a degree from a university outside your home country
you must not have studied outside your home country for one year or more
all candidates already holding a masters degree cannot apply for the masters scholarships. indian candidates already holding a phd degree cannot apply for the phd scholarship.
candidates are expected by the trust to return to work in their home country following their study
you must have been accepted for admission by the university by 30 january 2017 to be considered for shortlisting. you should therefore apply for admission at the earliest opportunity. candidates who have an academic condition on their offer of admission (such as completion of a qualification they are currently working towards) will need to successfully meet that condition by the short-listing stage (w/c 27 march 2017) in order to be considered for this year's competition; they should otherwise consider applying to the competition next year.
how to apply for the scholarship (applications currently closed)
candidates must:
1) complete an online application for admission to a postgraduate degree at the university of reading and hold an offer of admission by the deadline (30 january 2017).
apply online for admission to your postgraduate degree at reading
2) complete the electronic form at the bottom of this webpage in order to express your interest in being considered for the felix scholarships. this will ask you to confirm that you have read (and comply with) the felix scholarship criteria listed above. do not complete this form unless you have a valid 8-digit applicant number (id number) from the university's online admissions system otherwise it will not be accepted.
3) eligible candidates will then be considered for nomination by their academic school / department at stage one. if you are successful in being nominated, you will receive a request on wednesday 8 march 2017 asking you to complete a full felix application form. this must be returned by wednesday 15 march 2017.
4) nominees will then be considered for shortlisting by the university level panel at the beginning of april. if you are shortlisted by the university, you will be notified. candidates for the indian awards will be asked by representatives of the felix trust to attend an interview in india during april/may 2017.

additional information about the felix scholarship scheme, which also runs at the university of oxford and at the school of oriental & african studies, can also be found on the external felix scholarship website.
*the felix trustees have indicated that the 1 scholarship available to students from 'developing countries' is aimed primarily at candidates from africa and excludes "all western countries, including most of the european community, and china / taiwan". if nominated by the university for the award, the eligibility of high quality candidates from countries other than india and africa will need to be approved by the felix trustees.

3、獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金如何申請
雷丁大學(xué)博士獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金篇八
the schlumberger foundation 2017-2018 faculty for the future selection process is in closed.
the applications website will receive new applications from september 11th to november 17th, 2017 for the 2018-2019 faculty for the future fellowships.
the results will be announced in april 2018.
faculty for the future grant: eligibility criteria
to be eligible to apply for this fellowship applicants must meet the following criteria:
you:
- are a female and are a citizen of a developing country or emerging economy*. you are not eligible to apply if you hold dual citizenship of which one is citizenship of a developed country. (n.b. if you have been awarded a faculty for the future grant and after the award you obtain citizenship of a developed country, the grant will be discontinued as of the date of such additional citizenship);
- are preparing for a phd degree or post-doctoral research in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (stem) disciplines. awards in biological sciences are limited to interdisciplinary research between physical and biological sciences. the faculty for the future program does not fund master level studies;
- are enrolled, admitted or have applied to a host university/research institute abroad (applications are no longer accepted where a candidate has not yet applied to a university). if you are applying for a sandwich course the final degree must be awarded by the host university abroad (i.e., not from the home country university);
- hold an excellent academic record;
- have a proven track record of teaching experience or can demonstrate commitment to teaching;
- can demonstrate active participation in faculty life and outreach programs to encourage young women into the sciences;
- are willing to contribute to the socio-economic development of your home country and region by strengthening the faculties in your home university, pursuing relevant research, or using your specific expertise to address public policy matters.
if you do not meet the above criteria, please do not apply for a grant, as your application will not be retained in the selection process.
*faculty for the future focuses on developing and emerging countries. qualifying a country as advanced, developing or emerging, is a complex and often controversial topic. faculty for the future does not draw on one single source or list but constitutes its eligible country list from a number of sources which allows incorporation of development status with regard to science, gender and education for example. the most significant source drawn upon is the un human development index (hdi) including their gender development and gender empowerment indexes as well as indicators of adult educational levels. developing countries are defined as countries scoring medium or low in the un hdi. applications from emerging countries (i.e., countries scoring high in the hdi) may occasionally be awarded grants if the given country scores low in the un gender inequality index. the faculty for the future country list is reviewed every year and as levels of development fluctuate, a country may be on the list one year and not on the list the following year, and vice versa.
new grant application process
important: if you are a faculty for the future fellow who is in transition from a phd to post-doctoral research, please make sure you go through the new grant application channel, and not the renewal grant application channel.
how to apply:
applications are only accepted through the on-line system
when to apply for the 2018-2019 faculty for the future new fellowships:
the on-line system will be receiving new applications from september 11th, 2017.
general tips to help you:
- make sure you meet the eligibility criteria and the application deadline;
- plan ahead! producing a qood quality application takes time and final selection is based in part on the standard of your application and accompanying materials;
- have a clear strategy. make sure all parts of your application form an integrated whole. your application should highlight aspects about you and your career that will give the reviewer a focused yet well-rounded view of your candidature;
- read and follow the instructions carefully. the instructions are your guide to producing a comprehensive and and competitive application;
- information regarding available funding from other sources (fellowships, scholarships, sponsorships…) should also be provided.
a successful application will have gone through four selection rounds, with the reviewers paying particular attention to the following criteria:
- academic performance;
- quality of references;
- quality of host country university;
- level of commitment to return to home country;
- commitment to teaching;
- relevance of research to home country;
- commitment to inspiring young women into the sciences.
be sure to read the frequently asked questions (faq).
e-mails requesting information already included in the faq section will not receive a response.
renewal grant application process
important: if you are a faculty for the future fellow who is in transition from a phd to post-doctoral research, please make sure you go through the new grant application channel, and not the renewal grant application channel.
eligibility:
obtaining a renewal grant is not automatic. renewals are largely subject to performance, self-evaluation, evidence of re-integration plans in home country and recommendations from your current supervisor (preferably host and home) as well as availability of funding. strong evidence that other sources of funding have been explored should be indicated, especially if you have already received one renewal grant from faculty for the future.
how to apply:
applications are only accepted through the on-line system
