爵士舞跟現(xiàn)代舞和芭蕾舞一樣對生理方面是一種很嚴酷考驗，這使練習(xí)前暖身準備變得份外重要。暖身運動不論在心理或生理上也能為爵士舞者帶來好處。從生理學(xué)立場上看暖身運動效果包括：可增加肌肉收縮時速度和力量，改善肌肉協(xié)調(diào)能力，預(yù)防或減少肌肉、肌腱及韌帶傷害；尤其對爵士舞者來說，背部與胸、腹等部位使用程度也相當頻繁，所以在做暖身運動時更應(yīng)該注意。在心理上，能讓學(xué)習(xí)者有準備開始運動心理與培養(yǎng)情緒前奏，讓學(xué)生能更加集中和感覺學(xué)習(xí)沖勁。
爵士舞暖身動作是很有韻律，而且通常要持續(xù)20 -- 30分鐘。由于爵士舞課程中帶踮腳尖、快速彈踢、旋轉(zhuǎn)、跳踏、腹部之持續(xù)或快速收縮等動作，所以暖身運動中常加入芭蕾蹲（plié）及踮立動作（relevés）等來幫助預(yù)備腳和腿部肌肉，另外更需要有上身肢體軀干獨立和聯(lián)合動作來達到全身溫暖和肌肉柔韌效果。
跟暖身運動同樣重要環(huán)節(jié)是緩和運動。在爵士舞課堂完成尾段應(yīng)再做一次主要關(guān)節(jié)和肌肉伸展，好讓勞累肌肉得到更自然迅速舒緩，這有助減輕課堂翌日肌肉酸痛和疲累。
如果從體適能要素角度去分析，跳爵士舞有關(guān)考慮包括：
1. 心肺耐力 – 一般爵士舞一個動作組合之時間不是很長，但組合和組合之間休息時間往往很短，所以如果學(xué)習(xí)者心肺耐力較好時，一般在多次重復(fù)動作組合后仍保持好舞蹈技巧，不致有過早疲乏現(xiàn)象。
2. 肌力和肌耐力 – 爵士舞中很多快速和講求瞬速發(fā)力動作，所以基本肌肉力量是必需。另外，因為學(xué)習(xí)舞蹈時往往需要把同一動作重復(fù)練習(xí)多次，所以對肌肉耐力要求是比較高。尤其是下肢肌肉耐力必須鍛煉好，否則容易引致膝、踝和髖關(guān)節(jié)和附近肌肉受創(chuàng)。爵士舞者也透過其它輔助鍛煉法（如水中健體、瑜伽訓(xùn)練等）來增強肌肉能耐。
3. 柔軟度 – 不論跳甚么舞，如果要跳得美，身體柔軟度必須要好，否則不能發(fā)揮出應(yīng)有線條美感，爵士舞也不例外。在進行暖身伸展動作必須留意，不適宜在身體肌肉未完全和暖前用彈振形式來做伸展，否則容易弄巧反拙，拉傷肌肉。用靜態(tài)方式伸展較安全，不過也較需要耐性。柔軟度練習(xí)動作之幅度更不應(yīng)達到痛楚地步，肌肉有拉緊感覺即可，動作（角度）維持時間可由10余秒至30-40秒不等，時間愈長對肌肉及關(guān)節(jié)附近連結(jié)組織之負荷也愈高。
